Staff Education
The Department of Nursing supports professional growth through staff education. Staff education provides in-service and continuing education opportunities for National Jewish Health employees, starting with the orientation phase and continuing throughout employment. The emphasis is on providing hands-on education as well as auditing of employee skills to ensure competency.
National Jewish Health Department of Nursing is an approver of nursing continuing education through the California Board of Nursing.
We support our nurses with the following educational opportunities:

- Collaboration with Professional Education on a variety of projects
- Allied Health Conference
- Continuing online and live educational programs
Patient Education
Patient education is an integral part of the Department of Nursing. Patient education is individualized for the patient and family. Through individual instruction, group classes and educational materials, patients and families are taught self-management techniques. Equipped with important knowledge and tools, patients are able to participate in the management of their disease, reducing unnecessary physician and emergency room visits.

Research and Laboratories
National Jewish Health is committed to research, and the Nursing Department is involved in numerous research projects as members of the multidisciplinary team. Nursing is represented on the Internal Review Committee (IRB).
Bronwyn Long, RN, DNP is the lead researcher on a grant- funded research study to improve palliative care for COPD patients.
Nursing Informatics
Nursing Informatics plays a key role in adoption and meaningful use of the electronic medical record (EMR) to improve health care quality, safety and cost-effectiveness.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role assists clinical staff in partnership with Information Services and Technology (IST) to ensure technology supports clinical practice transformation.
With experience in nursing leadership and specialty training in health care informatics, consultation and education services are provided by the CNS to super users and end users to optimize use of the EMR.
Nursing Infection Prevention
Nursing plays a key role in the Infection Prevention Program by supporting clinical staff to prevent the transmission of infection.
