Special Interests

My research goals focus on understanding signals that control tissue damage and repair. My lab studies how the immune cells called macrophages perform multiple opposing functions over the course of lung injury: driving inflammation and pathogenic tissue remodeling, as well as promoting resolution and repair. We study how this switch is regulated by macrophage engulfment of dead cells, with particular interest in the involvement of cell metabolism. In ongoing work, we are also studying how the structural cells called fibroblasts recognize dead cells and how this activates the ability of fibroblasts to synthesize collagen following lung injury.
