Chronic sinusitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the mucous membranes that line the sinus cavities. Untreated and prolonged sinus inflammation can lead to increased sinus infections or chronic sinus-related symptoms. Poorly controlled sinusitis also can be associated with increased lung inflammation and worsening underlying conditions such as asthma.
Health care providers at National Jewish Health have been evaluating, treating and researching sinusitis for many years. Our clinicians continue to investigate the underlying mechanisms behind chronic sinusitis and new therapies that are more effective, better tolerated and less costly. National Jewish Health fosters a collaborative approach to the management of chronic sinusitis and related conditions, which includes experts in
- rhinology (nasal and sinus disorders) as a subspecialty of otolaryngology (ENT)
- allergy and immunology,
- pulmonary medicine, and
- infectious disease.
